Friends of Braswell Memorial Public Library
Volunteer Committee Charter – approved 6.19.08


The bylaws state that the purposes for which the organization is organized are:
A – To operate as a charitable organization within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, and to that end:

  • To foster and encourage the growth and improvement of library services to the citizens of the

  • To support vigorously a program for enlarging and extending services and resources in the library system; and,
  • To aid in providing adequate housing and other facilities for the library system, and;

B – To engage in any lawful act or activity for which non-profit corporations may be organized under Chapter 55A of the General Statutes of North Carolina and not inconsistent with being a charitable organization within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended.

 

Fundraising / Advocacy / Special Programs Committee:
The purpose of the Fundraising / Advocacy / Special Programs Committee will be to support, by fundraising efforts, special events and communications selected initiatives of Braswell Memorial Library, working in concert with library staff. 

  • Developing repetitive giving to FBMPL by individuals;
  • Developing corporate repetitive giving of stand-alone gifts as well as matching gifts of employees;
  • Special events such as Champagne and Chocolates, and Cultural and Recognition Events for Friends Members which include ticket sales for non-Friends.
  • Develop communication strategy for Friends corporate and individual/family Friends;
  • Develop communication strategy for promoting the Friends and BMPL by civic and community presentations;
  • Promote FBMPL and BMPL by participation in library advocacy happenings and events such as NC Friends, library legislative day, and community festivals (such as the Latino Festival and Down East Festival for the Arts).
  • Special Programs will provide programming events which educate, entertain, and support the general public, and Friends members.  Examples include:   Evening with Miguel Pico, Evening with Dr. Elliot Engel, Hurricane Floyd presentation, and book talks, special topic programs and speakers.   
  • Friends of BMPL newsletter
  • Annual BMPL staff recognition event

Membership and volunteer committee:
The purpose of the membership committee will be to:

  • Retain and nurture existing Friends of BMPL;
  • Recruit and cultivate new Friends through promoting membership options for active participation in committees;
  • To recruit and direct volunteers providing direct support to library events, programs and initiatives;  
  • To recruit and direct volunteers in to support of a specific event or program presented by the Friends; and,
  • The library maintains a list of job descriptions for its volunteer program and develops others as needed.  Future volunteer positions may include mentoring and tutoring in support of the homework centers and person to act as library guides or docents.
